Coolest Game Ever. Ever.

GenCon SoCal was the site of some of the better gaming experiences I've ever had (including a quietly heroic and very touching character death), and I hope to get motivated to post about them all.  But here and now, I gotta post about what has to be my coolest gaming experience EVER.

First, some background.  I am a HUGE Firefly fan.  By that, I mean the TV series, not the adorable firefly67.  I went to the con to play games, including a GURPS game based in the Firefly universe.  An additional attraction was the presence of Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds aka "Tight Pants") and Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), stars from the series.  I wandered over to get autographs, and was completely stunned by Nathan's personal charisma (as well as Morena's incredible beauty and sweet nature).  Nathan was, in fact, so approachable that I told him about the Firefly game, and when and where we'd be playing.  He said he'd try to come by.  (He also makes me weak in the knees, not a condition I'm used to, frankly, but that's for my other blog.)

Now, I know these folks are very busy and it was an off-the-wall request from a pretty geeky gamer-chick, so I really wasn't expecting either of them to appear.  I did keep glancing over my shoulder at the doorway during the 1pm - 2pm period, because hope springs eternal in the geeky breast, but no sign of Captain Tightpants.  No worries - it was an invite that I didn't really expect would produce results, and I hadn't mentioned it to the GM.  The game was amazing, and we were deep in the throes of a Firefly-style disaster when I heard my name being called from the hall.

I know a lot of people.  My friend Cynthia Wood (with whom I'm staying) says "next year I want to go to the con where *I'm* famous".  I figured it was one of my friends and scampered out into the hall -- to nearly run over Nathan Fillion.  The sweet man let me put my arm around him and introduce him as "my very good friend Nathan Fillion".  He joined us at the table, asked questions about the game, talked to *everyone*, and actually *listened* to what people said.  He was gracious with autographs and sat in on the game, even playing River (who was playerless and thus an NPC at that point) for a few minutes.  I think the player who had Malcolm Reynolds may have been a tad intimidated, though we did try to carry on with the game as if we didn't have one of the stars watching.

He posed with a character sheet, dice and the usual gamer paraphernalia for pictures, and spent a good 15 or 20 minutes with us.  He was the very definition of graciousness -- and dead sexy besides.  I'm honored to have made his acquaintance.   It was certainly the most incredible experience I've had at a game table to date!

Morena was even prettier in person than she is on television. Moreover, she was incredibly sweet, tolerant and patient. And natural - did I mention natural? She was genuinely happy to see these people who enjoy watching her on TV, and seemed a little surprised to be so adored.

Just for you, m'man, here's a link to the picture of Morena with me. Just crop out the fat chick in the "got dice" t-shirt.

The story behind that is this: I expressed my regret that we have to wait for Serenity, but that it's coming out on my 51st birthday. Morena expressed disbelief about my age, even when presented with my driver's license. I know it ain't clean living, and I have a t-shirt that explains it all -- "Evil Keeps Me Young". Morena was delighted by the idea, and since the t-shirt vendor (OffWorld Designs) was just around the corner I scampered off and bought the pretty lady a t-shirt. I just wish I'd realized they had it in a tank top as well...

The next day, Nathan reported that Morena had worn the t-shirt to a party they both attended and that it was a great hit.

Wow... lucky devil!

Did you get to play any LD? I'm hoping there's some good LD at Winter Fantasy. :)

I did play the LD, but I need to clear something up with Claire before I post about it. I will say that it was a great table (all female players, btw, with a male GM) and we had a great time among ourselves.

Wow! What a cool experience,Jae! I'd heard through a Firefly fan site that this had happened, and I'm delighted to learn that one of my friends was at the table.

In the "for what it's worth" category, I talked to Peter for a few minutes about the Firefly stars at the con, as well. They were charming and gracious, and I encouraged him to have them come whenever and wherever he could. One of the things I have always liked about Peter is how natural and responsive he is.

I saw the link to your journal on the Official Serenity Board, and just thought I would drop by and say hi.

I was at Gen Con too, to see Nathan and Morena. I have met Nathan before, but this was the first time I really had the opportunity to really talk to him.

What a sexy, charming, wonderful man.

Glad you had the experience you did!
